Pomegranate yogurt with mochi...heaven in a cup!I ordered a sandwich and a small cup of tomato basil soup. When I got the soup, I was a little crestfallen. It was orange! Ugh, why didn't they just call it tomato bisque? I gave it a shot and took a taste. Hmm...I think I know the recipe: heavy cream with a splash of tomato. Seriously? I could hardly taste the tomato in that soup. I remember telling C-Dub that I've been spoiled after the soups at Metro Fresh. The tomato soup at Metro actually tastes like tomato and doesn't weigh you down or make you feel piggish.
Luckily for me, I was able to make up for my soup sins at Metro Fresh today. They served a delicious tomato, roasted red pepper, and basil soup. Now this is how you do it!
Heaven in a...bowl?That soup was truly amazing. It was super flavorful and the roasted red peppers added a nice twist to an old favorite. I gotta say, that soup seriously kicked some Alon's ass. It started me thinking that I would much prefer to go to Metro Fresh over Alon's any day.
On top of that, Metro Fresh now recycles their bottles and cans, something I don't think Alon's does.
Yay!Am I the only one who is disenchanted with Alon's?

I still like Alon's bread and pastries, but I became fed up with the place because of the crowd I had to deal with on Saturday mornings. It was nothing but yuppies and the ex-yuppie power crowd, all in performance sports wear (e.g. mis-fitted mountaineering soft shells). Invariably, someone was rude or pushy while I tried to get some croissants and evacuate.
Don't forget about H&F Bread Co. for breads and pastries now!
i will add to david's wardrobe profile of alon's customers the occasional fanny pack, filled with an baseless sense of entitlement. i'm right up the street from alon's, and i love those damn cookies, but they're too expensive. everything is there. except the actual bread, in my opinion. i'll get bread. baguettes (Pretty awesome) ciabatta. but i have a thing against alon's. PLUS, they overtook Oldetown Pizza! the only pizza within walking distance--who'd give you beer specials if they knew who you were!
I used to go a lot more than I do now. The pastries and breads are stil great. But I think I just needed a break and will probably it up H & F on those days I want to spend time and money on baked goods.
No doubt ou are right about the Saturday crowds. I may in fact fit the description to some degree. But now that the summer is winding down for the Morningside Farmers Market, I bet that dies down a bit. (Babby)
